Bee and hummingbird pollination in Bolivian Justicia species
Guest Speaker Dr Alexander N. Schmidt-Lebuhn
There are many plant groups in the South American tropics showing a variety of pollination syndromes, often with related species shifting between insect, hummingbird or bat pollination. In recent years evidence has accumulated that hummingbird pollinated lineages may evolve to be more species rich than their bee pollinated relatives, and this has generally been explained by a higher degree of specialisation.
But are hummingbirds really more specialised than bees? Alexander presents a recently published ecological experiment testing a different possible explanation. The study group is the Acanthaceae, a pantropical plant family with beautiful, often highly specialised flowers.
Note change of venue to Yowani Country Club from May 19.
